Pay Board's Businessmen Challenge Hikes Over 7 Percent
Washington AP reports five business members of the Pay Board issued a late Tuesday statement challenging any future pay raises over 7 percent in contracts begun before the wage freeze on August 15. Virgil Day of GE led the group, signaling possible rollback of rises above guidelines. The move targets the construction sector where 1972 raises exceed the 6.1 percent national average, with implications for aerospace labor agreements and about 300,000 production workers nationwide. The board also questioned back pay and potential rollbacks in ongoing bargaining, while union members expressed urgency and frustration.
