Miners Rescued From Tehachapi Tunnel Cave-In After 19 Hours

Seventeen men trapped for 19 hours behind a cave-in in the Tehachapi mountains crawled through a narrow passage to surface near a 12 mile long State Water Project tunnel. Rescuers worked from three directions and through debris to shore up the escape tunnel. The Carley V Porter tunnel is part of a $2.8 billion California aqueduct delivering 110 million gallons per hour from Northern to Southern California.

Wamego Train Sideswipe Injures Passengers

A passenger train carrying 190 holiday travelers collided with a freight train near Wamego Kansas. About 50 passengers were injured with 12 remaining hospitalized overnight. no serious injuries reported. The Portland Rose and a 70-car freight train derailed after the freight fouled the main line while the passenger train pulled onto a siding to let it pass.
