First Fill Flight Is Cut Short At Fort Worth
The debut flight of the FIll fighter aircraft at Carswell Air Force Base reached 15 000 feet and 290 mph before a minor malfunction prevented wing retraction ending a 71 minute test. Navy officials praised the test while concerns over weight and cost surfaced from observers. Pilot Richard L. Johnson and co pilot Val B. Prahl reported an overall successful takeoff and landing with performance deemed satisfactory by General Dynamics executives.

British House Votes To End Death Penalty
In London the House of Commons approved in principle a bill to end hanging for murder by a 355 to 170 vote, a large margin helped by some Conservative support. The move, likely to be backed by the House of Lords, would mark the end of capital punishment in peacetime Britain, leaving France and Spain as the only West European nations executing murderers. Two men remain on death row, a 26 year old croupier and a 20 year old mobster, with one scheduled to die Jan 5. Prison officers criticized the decision as offering near impunity for killings by prisoners.

Computer Plays Carols For First Graders
Twenty first graders from Public School 166 in Manhattan visited NYU to see the IBM 7094 in action at the Courant Institute. The computer produced musical lights and played carols while Henry Mullish explained it can add up to 250 000 numbers per second. A student asked why we use computers and the reply noted that questions can be asked. The visit also noted a tale that a tobacco plant reached Europe in 1568 via Francisco Fernandes.
