United States delegate Adlai Stevenson said the United Nations will endure amid life and death issues tested this year. He noted progress on Congo, the China seat, and UN finances, while urging urgent reforms to peacekeeping procedures to prevent future force use and disintegration.
Pope John XXIII in his Christmas message appeals for peace and a more equitable sharing of world wealth. In Cincinnati a man named Clay J Harper was jailed for 60 days after attempting to sell a hot radio for 10 dollars to a deputy sheriff who arrested him. Harper claimed he intended to make a quick profit and had prior burglary and petty theft history dating back to 1934.
Washington AP report says Air Force charges Capt. Joseph P. Kauffman 43 with conspiring to pass U S defense information to foreign agents during a 1960 Germany visit. He is returned to Germany for investigation and could face court martial with possible death penalty though likely not.
