Dutch forces land on Sumatra and press advance in central Java. A Netherlands communique says Toeban has fallen, with Bodjonegoro, Pati, Bojolali, and Jogjakarta seized as the Indonesian republic appeals for scorched earth resistance.
Canberra reports Prime Minister Joseph Chifley said Australia will ask the United Nations Security Council for an immediate cease-fire in Indonesia. He also called for Dutch forces to return to their prior demarcation lines and for UN Good Offices Committee observers to prevent reprisals or executions.
The report describes heavy fighting in Jogjakarta with claims of 52 Dutch parachute troopers killed and uprisings across Java. It notes Indonesian forces recapturing Kebangjan, Dutch detentions of Soekarno and aides, and a move toward a federal interim regime while UN officials monitor 18 workers in Republican territory.
A Westminster Hotel blaze at 2040 Chestnut St Philadelphia killed two guests and injured three others. Phoenix AP report says Elmer G Lipps 55 of Oak Park Illinois, a retired paper box manufacturer, was found dead in his hotel room. Coroner Wesley Bolin attributes death to a hemorrhage and says no inquest will be held. Lipps formerly owned the Franklin Folding Paper Box Company of Chicago. survived by widow Irene and brother Walter of Akron Ohio.
Russian forces blockaded the Berlin Stolpe road, installing a Soviet administrator on Stolpe’s 850 acre estate. A rural policeman remained on duty as the village, whose 600 inhabitants watched a barrier rise, faced incorporation into the Soviet zone amid claims of wartime farm looting and a coerced election.
Sid Gillman, line coach at West Point, accepted the University of Cincinnati head football coach job. UC athletic director M. Charles Mileham announced an eight year, $10 000 per year contract, the longest in UC history, after Gillman wired that he had release from West Point.

The United States Britain and France announced a three power government for Berlin with Soviet exclusion. The French commandant Gen Jean Gaveval read a statement saying the quadripartite administration can resume if Soviet authorities decide to abide by the Four Powers agreement. Governor Herbert commuted the sentences of three escaped convicts who returned to Ohio prisons, making them free for Christmas. All three had years of private life rehabilitation and returned voluntarily.
A CNAC Shanghai to Hong Kong C-54 Skymaster crashed off Hong Kong in fog, with 31 aboard feared dead. The airliner departed Shanghai earlier and vanished after losing contact, reportedly crashing near Bafalt Island.
Shanghai AP reports Quen tin Roosevelt, grandson of the U.S. president, aboard a CNAC C-54 Skymaster that crashed on Basalt Island near Hong Kong with 33 aboard possibly killed. Aviation circles say he left for Hong Kong on business and was aboard the flight. Also Manchester AP notes seven RAF men died when a Lancaster bomber crashed into a mountain near Manchester.

Postmaster John E. Doyle said in Youngstown Ohio that Christmas mail was light with several hundred extra workers sent home after a day of below expected mail volume.
AP reports a Christmas amnesty freed 39 Japanese prisoners serving Army provost court sentences. Maj. Gen. William C. Chase, commanding the U S First Cavalry Division, ordered their release. Original sentences ranged from four months to five years.
Dublin AP report that Eire became a free independent republic as President Sean T. O'Kelly signed Ireland out of the British commonwealth. The act ends the last constitutional tie to the crown and commonwealth with independence to be proclaimed in spring. Columbus AP reports Berna Rusoff aged 85 was struck and killed by a truck while crossing a street late last night. The incident occurred in Columbus and authorities are investigating the crash.
