Army Leave Policy Trouble Looms Over 14 Day Home Leave

Twenty five of the first U S service members to use the new 14 day U S home leave failed to return to Vietnam aboard the charter flight, blamed partly on U S winter weather and transportation problems. The Pentagon said they may be marked absent without leave only if they did not notify their units. Some may have to pay at least 510 dollars for a commercial return if they cannot rebook. The leave program aimed to boost morale and ease wartime withdrawal pressure. A key rule requires confirmed travel space to return before leave ends.
