U S intelligence says Communist command moved troops and war materiel toward Saigon for a winter spring campaign set to begin after New Year. Viet Cong marked its eighth anniversary with grenade attacks and a deadly Saigon shooting wounding civilians and injuring others.
Michigan Governor George Romney to join the Nixon administration as head of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. A Capitol press corps poster at Romney’s Lansing Christmas party hints at the change as he prepares to relocate to Washington. Eleven American servicemen captured last July when their river boat entered Cambodian waters were released and flown to Bangkok for Christmas. One more, Spec. 4 Earl Gurnsey, was unable to travel due to injuries from a November crash. The release, announced by Cambodian chief of state Prince Norodom Sihanouk, was arranged through the Australian Embassy in Phnom Penh and a Manila–Bangkok airlift.
President elect Nixon named long time diplomat Charles W. Yost to be United Nations ambassador. Sargent Shriver will stay ambassador to France. Yost, 61, last served as U.N. deputy ambassador under Arthur J. Goldberg before retiring in 1966.
FBI and Miami police hunted a scientist, a woman, and a man in the Barbara Jane Mackle kidnapping case. Robert Mackle offered $500,000 and condemned the attempt as investigators traced a car to George G. Deacon, a UM geologist, while a ransom boat was tied to the Marine Sciences Institute. Barbara, 20, an Emory junior, was abducted from a Atlanta motel.
