Supreme Court to guard private phone talks from eavesdropping
The Supreme Court ruled 7 to 1 safeguards on private telephone conversations against government eavesdropping, except in national security cases. Justice Stewart said protection applies whether or not officials trespass, overturning Katz's conviction for taped bets from public booths on Sunset Boulevard. The decision also shifted 4th Amendment scope to protecting the person rather than a fixed place.
