An oil tanker named Sansinena exploded at Los Angeles Harbor, killing at least one and injuring many as the ship split, with debris flying to surrounding streets. Rescue crews searched the wreckage while police ordered broad emergency measures and evacuated hundreds from nearby areas.
In Spokane Washington AP six days after receiving swine flu vaccine 35 year old grocery clerk Jan Osmond became weak and unable to move or swallow. Neurologist Dr Nelson Cooke diagnosed Guillain Barre syndrome linked to the vaccination and cited a national moratorium on the swine flu immunization. Osmond lives in Endicott 60 miles south. Doctor John Hardy of Endicott agrees the shot caused temporary paralysis.
Soviet dissident Vladimir Bukovsky arrived at Zurich airport aboard an Aeroflot jet to begin exile in Switzerland after a prisoner exchange with a Chilean communist. The swap makes two leading political prisoners leave their homelands for new lives.
A fundraiser in Greenwich Village drew about 300 people at Copperfield's to aid Patti Wayne, the "Playgirl of Wall Street," who was injured during a nude headstand as an overzealous patron disrupted her performance. Wayne, recovering at home with her seven dogs, faces uncertain if she can perform again amid back and neck pain.
President-elect Carter selects Gov. Cecil Andrus of Idaho for interior secretary at his fourth news conference. Andrus, chairman of the National Governors Conference, noted as a natural choice while Carter also weighs women in his cabinet and eyes labor and commerce posts for others.
