GOP Chairman Fight Delays Dole Bid for Party Post
Liberal moderates within the Republican Party appear to block at least temporarily the selection of Robert J. Dole of Kansas as national chairman. Senate sources note pressure from Republican Leader Hugh Scott and top party operators, with many moderates seeking a newer image for the GOP. Dole remains confident, citing 31 senators in his favor, while some backers and skeptics alike press for a choice who would not resign his current role. The delay stems from questions of role and image, and Scott says he will be consulted and has his own list of possible choices.
