A U S Air Force C 123 Provider crashed south of Chu Lai killing 14 of 44 aboard. Most of the 30 survivors were injured with three in serious condition. All believed American, crash cause unknown, plane cartwheeled and burned after takeoff from Chu Lai airstrip.
Saigon says it is prepared to discuss New Year and Tet truces with North Vietnam. Hanoi may reject or insist on negotiating with the Viet Cong, who already announced three day cease-fires for Christmas New Year and Tet. The U S Command reports a recon plane was fired on but not hit in the southern DMZ during the latest flare up.
President elect Nixon may soon indicate willingness for Senate ratification of the nuclear arms control treaty, though his official position remains vague. U S disarmament negotiator Foster said Nixon suggested timing could be ripe for action, but no timetable was pledged.
