India says Damao and Diu were liberated on day one of a campaign against Goa beyond Bombay. Nehru announced the three pronged strike with tanks and air power, claiming rapid gains while Portugal pressed for UN action and protests.
UNITED NATIONS, N.Y. AP reports India’s invasion of Goa and two Portuguese territories likely to trigger a UN Security Council meeting and possible censure of Prime Minister Nehru’s government. The action follows U Thant’s failed bid to negotiate with Portuguese Premier Antonio Salazar over the enclaves.
In Niteroi near Rio de Janeiro a nylon circus tent fire killed about 250 spectators and injured around 500 as thousands watched. Early reports cited arson risk and authorities moved bodies to morgue and stadium amid chaos while helicopters airlifted medical aid. Survivors included trapeze artist Antonietta Estevanovich who escaped with her partner after jumping into safety nets.
President Kennedy, suffering a heavy cold, remains in Palm Beach, Florida, after a Latin American trip. Press secretary Salinger says he will fly to Washington Tuesday, staying over to join Mrs Kennedy and the children for Christmas. Crowds greet the Kennedys in Caracas and Bogota. half a million Colombians line roads and jam streets.
U S infantry Company C of the 3rd Battle Group, 6th Infantry Regiment, led by Capt Robert Rafferty, moved about 120 soldiers and 17 vehicles along the lifeline Autobahn from West Berlin. The unit will spend four days in West Germany for field training before returning to West Berlin, defying East German pressure to halt troop movements.
Sulphur Springs Alabama report: an explosion demolished a rural church killing 10 year old David Morgan who arrived early for Sunday school. Five others injured including his mother, brother and sister. Neighbor Russell Morgan recalled the church would have crowded minutes later. The blast occurred as Sunday school superintendent John Sizemore attempted to light a heater.
In Caracas on a tense Saturday and Sunday Kennedy urged hemispheric backing for the Alliance for Progress, a $20 million plan to raise Latin American living standards, while voicing strong support for Venezuelan President Romulo Betancourt and Colombia’s President Alberto Lleras Camargo. He stressed counting on their example to generate broad support for the initiative.
The town’s ice cream parlor owner earned a dubious reputation by posting a sign reading Free Ice Cream Tomor row and leaving it up for days, drawing amused contempt and lingering mystery about the prank.

Snow hit the West and 42 inches fell near Flagstaff Arizona. Severe rains and thunderstorms battered the Southeast, with a tornado in western Alabama causing minor damage. Flooding forced hundreds from homes in Alabama and Mississippi and about 250 families evacuated near Pearl River and Cahaba rivers.
One of Adolf Eichmanns attorneys Sun day filed notice of appeal against the death sentence. The Israeli Supreme Court is expected to hear the appeal in January. Lawyers Servatius and Wechtenbruch challenge the conviction on grounds of unlawful return to Israel, lack of right to try crimes before statehood, and an unjust death sentence. Eichmann is housed at Ramleh prison, east of Tel Aviv.
Thant sent identical cables to Nehru and Salazar urging immediate negotiations to resolve border tensions around the western enclaves. Nehru rejected, accusing Portugal of clinging to colonial concepts and ignoring UN resolutions, while Salazar agreed to negotiations and international guarantees for border use.
