Margaret Gentry reports that William Bart Saxbe, a blunt Ohio farmer and politician, resigns as attorney general under Ford to become ambassador to India. He shepherded the department through a calm year with few scandals while critics focused on his blunt style.
The Senate voted 56 to 27 and 55 to 27 to water down a desegregation curb as part of an $8.6 billion supplemental bill for schools and housing. The bill returns to the House while a bid to extend the Export-Import Bank failed 49 to 35, seven votes short of the two thirds. A new attempt is planned for Monday.
Catherine and Randolph Hearst publish an open letter calling their fugitive daughter Patricia to come home for the holidays. They plan to move from their 22 room mansion to an apartment in San Francisco, hoping to ease memories of the kidnaping.
The Rev. George Ogle, 45, native of Pitcairn Pennsylvania, was expelled after criticizing President Park Chung Hee. He boarded a Korea Air Lines flight to Los Angeles via Tokyo and Honolulu as immigration authorities removed him, while his wife and four children followed. Witnesses recalled his shouted blessings for the Korean people and the regime.
Six nations including Costa Rica Nicaragua Honduras El Salvador Guatemala and Venezuela agreed to withhold part of their coffee crops from the world market to prop up prices. Venezuela pledged financial backing and finance ministers will meet in Guatemala to arrange details.

President Ford formally submits to the Senate on Saturday the nomination of Attorney General William Saxbe as ambassador to India. Saxbe would succeed Daniel Moynihan, with a successor as attorney general not yet named.
