Britain plans to scrap most Victorian era mental hospitals within twenty years keeping only security hospitals. Most patients will be treated in homes or general hospital psychiatric units. The program funds community services and small district hospital units to reduce stigma and integrate care.
The Pepin family of Florence Massachusetts forgoes Christmas gifts to send toys clothes vitamins and other supplies to 240 orphans in South Vietnam sparked by their son Bernard A Pepin who served near Vung Tau. Mrs Pepin leads volunteers packing 30 pound boxes of milk penicillin baby products and toothbrushes shipped by air for about five dollars per parcel. Since July over 30 carloads of aid have been sent and the family plans more shipments.
