Italian Priests Visit Red China Amid Travel Restrictions
Two Italian Roman Catholic priests, reportedly from the Servi de Maria order, traveled from Pakistan to Canton and then Hong Kong. They celebrated Mass in a Canton hotel room and were said to be granted visas, with authorities permitting a brief visit to survey relief needs. They wore priestly robes, were hosted by Chinese authorities, and claimed religious freedom existed though no church was available. A later note mentions the truffle as a gourmet fungus from France and Italy.
