Wounded Marine sacrifices finger for wedding ring
Victorville California Marine Lance Cpl. David Battle decided at a field hospital in Iraq to have his left ring finger removed to save the wedding band he wore. After a Nov. 13 Fallujah firefight left him wounded, doctors cut the finger, and the ring was lost in the chaos. Battle, 19, met Devon in eighth grade and married in June before deployment. He hopes to return to the Marines and replace the ring, while his high school prepares a banquet in his honor and praises his bravery.
