Pan Am 707 Plunges Into Caribbean Sea Near Caracas
A Pan American 707 bound from New York to Caracas exploded and crashed into the Caribbean about 16 miles from Venezuela's international airport near Caracas. Fifty-one aboard included 42 passengers and nine crew. Seven bodies recovered by dawn. search for survivors ongoing with many passengers from the United States Canada Italy and Venezuela. Pilot Capt Sidney E Stillwaugh 53 of West Islip NY led the non stop flight. notable passengers included Miss Venezuela 1962 Olga Antonetti de Dugarte and Venezuelan advertising executive Luis Beltran Gonzalez.
