In Beirut the leftist Moslem gunmen holding the Holiday Inn and surrounding hotels pledged to ignore cease-fire terms until Phalangists are expelled. They seek Moslem control of government and economy and vow to reopen the area to tourism and business despite state demands for a halt to fighting.
Coast Guard reports 14 survivors rescued from life raft and small craft after the 315 foot Drosia sank four minutes after hatch rupture near 90 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras. Ten crewmen remain unaccounted for as Navy and merchant vessels aid in search and rescue.
FTC Judge Ernest Barnes ruled the National Commission of Egg Nutrition must halt ads claiming no scientific evidence of harm from eggs. He cited substantial evidence that eating eggs raises heart disease risk and ordered the lobby to clarify it represents industry interests. The Postal Service reports a revised last year deficit of 989 million, up from 828 million, due to underestimated workers compensation costs. Irish guerrillas released Sheila Matthews a 50 year old British woman held with her husband in a London second floor apartment for nearly six days. Scotland Yard said the rescue began when Matthews appeared on her balcony with a hooded man showing he was unarmed. Police assisted her to safety as gunmen remained inside.
United Airlines faces a walkout by 16,500 machinists prompting all flights to be canceled through December 24. An industry strike insurance plan could net the carrier two to three million dollars daily while the strike lasts, but weekly benefits of forty dollars for eligible workers will end January 1.
