Meer Corp. reports a 20 to 30 percent price increase for frankincense and myrrh in New York as demand for the resins grows. Myrrh sells at 80 cents a pound and frankincense at 44 to 68 cents per pound, with a potential 1.10 per pound price if supply allows. Both resins serve perfume bases, scented candles, and religious observances.
The Petroleum Industry Research Foundation said U S fuel shortages will be a little less severe in early 1974, with oil shortfalls up to 2 8 million barrels daily versus government 3 5 million. The stock market rose for the third straight session as energy news dimmed, while Oil Minister Yamani signaled possible embargo end if Israel withdraws from occupied land and the U S guarantees it.
A Senate House conference committee agreed on moving to daylight saving time by the second week in January with the fourth Sunday after enactment as the start. Rep. Harley Staggers said the bill could reach the White House soon and would last through October 1975. The White House cited possible energy savings up to three percent while critics doubt reliable figures. Separately the Senate sent to the House a labeling bill for energy use on autos and major appliances and a $200 million loan guarantee program to spur a fuel efficient car within a decade.
In Cortland, Trumbull County, an elderly man Hermer McLaughlin, 70, and his wife Edna, 57, were shot with a shotgun at their home. Edna died at the scene from a head wound. Hermer died after being taken to Warren General Hospital from abdominal injuries.
The Cost of Living Council exempted auto, truck and bus production from wage and price rules, signaling immediate price hikes. Ford will raise prices on orders after today, GM Chrysler AMC announce later this week, with wholesale increases capped to about 150 dollars for full size models and limited retail boosts for certain compact lines. In Lima Ohio AP report a 19 year old Delphos youth Danny Lumpkins was shot and killed by police after grabbing a shotgun and firing when surprised during an apparent sporting goods store burglary. He died at a Lima hospital about an hour later.
