Families of Apollo 17 push into the moment as Eugene Cernan and Jack Schmitt plan a moon landing this afternoon while Ronald Evans remains in lunar orbit. wives and relatives monitor the mission on TV and squawk boxes after a dramatic launch and insertion into moon orbit.
The Cernan and Evans families, living in different neighborhoods near the Space Center, await word as the spacecraft enters lunar orbit. Mrs Cernan recalls Apollo 10 and A formed mood shifts from nerves to elation as the craft reappears from the moon's dark side.
Astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt prepared the Challenger for touchdown in Taurus Littrow on the moon while Ronald Evans remained aboard the command ship America. Cernan became the 11th man on the lunar surface and Schmitt joined soon after as TV coverage began for hours of exploration.
A passenger train collided with a stationary freight train near Vendhan Station in Varna district, killing 26 passengers and injuring 10. It was unclear if any foreigners were aboard as the Sofia Tolbukhin line was affected.
Three blasts struck Cuban owned firms in Miami and New York within minutes. Police say a plastic bomb damaged the Ya Cuba Forwarding Co in Miami and two offices in New York including the Va Cuba Forwarding Co in Washington Heights and the Calypso Travel Agency in Queens. Anarda Falcon reported threats received before the New York blasts. Federal agents investigate all three incidents.
Cincinnati Reds catcher Johnny Bench had surgery to remove an inflammatory lesion from his right lung. Doctors found no malignancy and deemed the lesion benign, with tests to determine the cause. Bench, age 25, had entered the hospital after the Bengals Browns game and discussed his late season homer streak and league lead in homers and RBIs.
Paris reports say Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho met for the 13th time in three weeks at a Neuilly villa as they recess talks and examine cease fire terms. Moscow visitor Le Thanh Nghi joined the discussions while White House officials declined plans for Haig to travel. The Hanoi government warned of continued fighting as Saigon accused Hanoi of seeking to take over post cease fire.
Cloudy skies and cooler temperatures are forecast with a chance of snow or freezing rain. Lows near 20 tonight and highs in the upper 30s tomorrow. The outlook shows continued cloudiness and low temps with rain or snow through Friday. In Middletown yesterday the high was 31 and overnight low 15 with 1.2 inches of rain this weekend.
North Vietnamese troops infiltrated toward Saigon from the Parrot's Beak region in Cambodia and clashed with South Vietnamese militia nine miles south of Tay Ninh. Initial reports say 87 NVA were killed. U S air strikes, including 13 B52s, concentrated near Tay Ninh and along the DMZ area.
