Wage gaps and hiring shifts for 1971 graduates in a Northwestern study
A national survey of 191 firms shows fewer men and more women hired from the college class of 1971. Starting salaries rise for men about 2 percent and for women about 4 percent, yet women’s pay remains lower across engineering, accounting, liberal arts, and finance categories. Endicott notes discrimination cited by 126 firms as a reason for lower women’s salaries, with other causes including work preferences and perceived qualifications.
