A passenger jet with 61 aboard stalled in sleet and snow while approaching Midway Airport and plunged into a Chicago south side residential area. Forty three are reported dead as the nose went up and the plane crashed in a tidy bungalow district.
A United Air Lines Boeing 737 on a Washington to Omaha flight fell short of Midway Airport and sliced through five homes in a Chicago neighborhood. At least 43 killed, including U S Representative George W Collins and CBS journalist Michelle Clark, with 61 aboard. Survivors treated in Holy Cross Hospital, investigation underway.
President Nixon completes second term cabinet with Richard G. Kleindienst remaining as attorney general and four other Justice Department aides and Interior officials exiting. Yale law professor Robert Bork is nominated to replace Griswold as solicitor general, Jewel Lafontant named deputy solicitor general.
Rain is forecast for the weekend with highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s and overnight lows in the 20s. Colder weather follows early next week with daytime highs around 35 and subfreezing nights.
AP dispatch notes window signs in Kansas City urging “give ’em hell Harry” as former President Harry S Truman remains in critical condition. Friday night bulletin said Truman was “critical but slightly improved” after a late night feeding at Research Hospital.
Doctors reported former president Truman 88 tolerated 32 ounces of liquid nutrition through a nasal tube as his pulse slowed and blood pressure stayed normal. Daughter Margaret Truman Daniel disputed earlier comments calling them exaggerated while wife Bess joined hospital briefing.

In Paris Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho met for a sixth secret session this week at a Gif-sur-Yvette villa. No word on progress toward a Vietnam peace settlement. The guarded talks have alternated between the Gif-sur-Yvette site and a Neuilly suburb residence over more than 40 hours since November 20.
Apollo 17 astronauts Eugene Cernan Harrison Schmitt and Ronald Evans complete a final rehearsal aboard the space ships America and Challenger. The trio prepares for a lunar landing the next day with a minor latch issue fixed during the test and all systems reported ready for surface exploration.
