The world Communist movement publicly backs Khrushchev’s peaceful coexistence line after a prolonged summit at the Kremlin ending Nov 9. China and 90 parties endorse his approach while debates over war versus negotiation continue among global communists.
A bearded man lugging a ton of Nixon campaign buttons unsuccessfully tried to give them away at the White House gates. Veterans and supporters watched as President Eisenhower greeted Democratic Senator John F. Kennedy who had defeated Nixon for the presidency.
The Soviet Union urged an urgent UN Security Council meeting to address Congo turmoil. It called for Lumumba’s immediate release and for disarming Mobutu's Congo army forces who detained him. Dag Hammarskjold asked Congo for access by the Red Cross to ensure Lumumba’s safety.
