President Truman and Prime Minister Attlee agreed on a vigorous effort to raise production and use scarce raw materials effectively. After their morning talks at the White House, the leaders focused on economic problems from mutual defense efforts and raw material needs.
Charlie Ross, 65, longtime press secretary to President Truman, died at 5:50 p.m. at his desk after a heart attack. Ross rose to prominence when Truman became president and was describing a press conference when he collapsed. He was a former ace reporter for the St Louis Post Dispatch and had covered meetings between Truman and Prime Minister Attlee. The White House said Ross died at his post, a casualty of duty and truth seeking.
In Manila a dark shape near Cavite Naval Base pre dawn prompted Seaman Benedicto Torres and four U S soldiers to fire on what appeared to be a submarine. Daylight revealed a 10 ton sperm whale. Officials forbid dumping it and the group seeks a disposal site.
Par ish AP reports Deanna Durbin and director Ghattes David posted notice to marry on December 16. The couple announced plans to wed in the coming weeks with a ceremony expected in the near future.
AP report from Lake Success notes Russia's Andrei Vishinsky blasting a 13-nation Asian and Middle East peace appeal to Peiping to halt forces at Korea’s 38th parallel. He spoke to the UN Assembly as it voted 51 to 5 to place a halt intervention resolution on emergency program. Vishinsky accused the appeal of hypocrisy and pressed for UN forces to withdraw. British and Philippine diplomats push for swift Assembly action amid decoupled vetoes in the Security Council.
The Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson arrived in New York aboard the Queen Elizabeth. The couple greeted each other with kisses and laughed at reports they were estranged. The Duchess had preceded him from Europe to the United States by a few weeks.
Refugees fleeing the advancing Chinese Red Army gather along tracks near Kumchon at the 38th parallel. Thousands trapped, forced from trains, clinging to boxcars, bulldozers, and ledges as they seek escape toward Seoul. Capt. C. L. Andress recalls deadly freezes and crushes on the icy road south. No safe passage at Kumchon leaves them fearful and stranded.
Middletown officials face a decision on continuing rent controls as City Commission meets tonight. Thomas M. Hynes, area rent agent, says he spoke with city leaders and Hamilton officials about action before December 31. The housing survey from the Housing Expeditor division is released, illustrating the local housing squeeze and responsiveness to ads and real estate agents.
Stassen urged an immediate cease fire in Korea or an all-out assault using atomic and other weapons on Chinese forces if the Reds refuse. He said MacArthur should be directed to strike in any manner if needed, and suggested a withdrawal of non Korean forces after a cease fire. He emphasized the views were his own and did not reflect U S government policy.
Nine year old Mary Ann Kawczynski told an ambulance crew she would die and asked to have her picture in the paper so schoolmates would know. She died of a heart ailment before reaching the hospital, and the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle published her photo this morning.
Washington AP Lyndon Johnson says defense officials are revising manpower estimates for mobilization in all fields and has delayed hearings of the Senate Armed Services subcommittee. He heads the panel and notes changes reflect developments of the last 10 days. The panel will focus on manpower for mobilization and production of tanks airplanes and other defense needs.
Allied Eighth Army halted its retreat from Pyongyang and dug in along a new western line to block Chinese advances. The position runs south of Pyongyang toward south and east, possibly near the 38th parallel. South Korean units cleared guerrillas near Sibyon while U. S. forces moved to aid Marines near Changjin reservoir, countered by Chinese attacks two miles north of Mason.
Prime Minister Attlee pledged Britain will fight alongside the United States as long as the Stars and Stripes fly in Korea. In a National Press Club luncheon speech, he defended recognizing Communist China and urged steady, world-peace aiming policy while opposing emotional shifts in Korea policy. He noted Allied forces fight with U N under the long-range goal of international law.
Washington reports describe an eight Army frontline stance as U S forces cope with a large Chinese enveloping move near Hungnam and Wonsan. A 20 year old Franklin youth was captured near Carlisle after a shooting and slugging during an attempted robbery at the Jackson Filling Station on River Rd. Alex Jackson, the proprietor, was struck on the head with a gun but remained conscious and called police. Police Chief O E Chamberlain said two shots were fired before the suspect fled toward the river.
