Near Saigon the 1st Air Cavalry battled 400 North Vietnamese troops hidden in jungle near the Cambodian frontier. Twenty five Americans died and 52 were wounded as the unit, averaging 18,000 men, fought for hours with rockets bombers and helicopter gunships delivering a heavy bombardment.
Ambassador Averell Harriman, back from Paris, meets President Johnson to map the handover of the U S peace team to the incoming Nixon administration. Officials expect focus on restarting talks with North Vietnam and shaping a new war curtailment strategy as the South Vietnam delegation nears Paris.
Police cracked down as student strikers clashed with officers. Acting President S I Hayakawa called tactics a reign of terror and vowed further force if unrest continued. About 300 of 18 000 students joined rock throwing mud and debris attacks injuring at least nine people including five officers.
A Cuban-born hijacker on a National Airlines jet forced a one hour 21 minute fuel stop in Key West then flew toward Havana. He spoke of life in the United States, threatened crew, and identified himself as Eddie Canteras a 33 year old from Havana. Cuban authorities kept the passengers from leaving Havana and the crew later returned to Miami.
Edward Spencer Myers known as K S Myers 74 longtime publisher of the Middletown Journal died at home on Nelson Road He guided the paper for 34 years retiring in 1958 and expanded its reach He served in civic and newspaper circles and was a former OSU journalism student and Army veteran Surviving wife Margaret son Frank daughter Nancy Hawk nine grandchildren Funeral Thursday at 2 p.m. at McCoy Leffler Funeral Home Burial in Woodside Cemetery
