Heavy snows hit northern Ohio with varying intensity

A powerful snowstorm dumped over a foot in Toledo and Akron while Sandusky saw little. Kent reported 21 inches, Canton 16.4 inches set a 73 year record, and Ohio highway travel faced closures.

Eastern storms lash nation with snow and crashes

A major winter storm battered the eastern half of the United States with heavy snow and high winds. A Trans World Airlines jet crashed in Virginia killing all 92 aboard while a chartered plane en route to Buffalo crashed near Stony Point New York three crewmen died. Two Marines and a child died in a North Carolina boating accident. Roads flooded with snowdrifts across the Mississippi to Appalachians and car pileups occurred on the Pennsylvanian Turnpike. Airports in Chicago Cleveland and Detroit faced delays and cancellations as cities reported record snowfalls including Detroit 19 inches Akron 16 Mansfield 12 and Berkeley West Virginia 11 inches.

Coal contract approval hinted in union vote

Rank and file members of the United Mine Workers began voting on a negotiated coal contract for the first time in 84 years. Early returns favored approval with locals in Pennsylvania voting 422 to 313 and others continuing today and Tuesday. Local 1248 at Maple Creek mine passed 238 to 223. Miller’s reform leadership urged member control through secret ballots and copies of the contract.

Ford to talk on nuclear pact at tonight’s news conference

President Ford holds his first nationally broadcast news conference since returning from the Soviet Union. He will outline the tentative nuclear arms agreement reached in Vladivostok with Soviet leader Leonid I Brezhnev. Middletown Weather Outlook Calls for Snow Flurries Tonight

A window of light snow is possible in Middletown tonight with lows in the mid-20s. Tuesday will see partly cloudy skies and highs in the 30s, following yesterday's 36 and overnight 28. The weekend left about 5 inches of snow, with fair skies Wednesday, a chance of rain Thursday, and clearing Friday.

Nine HUD staff among 46 dead in TWA crash at Upperville

In a Washington area crash, nine Housing and Urban Development Department staff from Columbus were killed when Trans World Airlines Flight 514 crashed near Upperville Virginia. The Columbus victims include Mattie Jones Kathleen Farrell Rita Shelton Mary Beth Graves Fred Lorenz Betty Whitehead Annie Killingsworth Terry Meehan and Marleen Jackson. Retired Brig Gen Roscoe Cartwright also died aboard the flight.
