Pittsburgh AP reports a new round of steel price hikes under study may raise costs on autos to toasters. U S Steel Corp posted a five dollar per ton increase on two steel sheet grades, with other producers watching.
President Johnson promotes Rufus W. Youngblood to deputy director of the Secret Service and Clint Hill to chief of the White House detail. Youngblood credited with pushing Johnson to the floor and shielding him during the November 22, 1963 assassination.
U S B52 Stratofortresses dropped 150000 pounds of bombs near the DMZ to counter renewed North Vietnamese thrusts after two days of clashes. Marines at Con Thien reported enemy positions hit and 14 more bodies found from a Thursday battle. One American was killed and ten wounded in renewed shelling near Dak To.
In Cleveland the Hough area faced more than 24 hours without heat after a 76 year old water main burst at East 70th Street and Hough Avenue. About 5 000 homes lacked heat as East Ohio Gas crews worked to restore gas service. Red Cross ran shelter at Edison and Addison junior high schools with more than 100 staying the first night.

Army releases Pfc. Joe A. Smith of Brownsville California next week amid a show cause order from U.S. District Judge Robert C. Peckham. Smith spent 18 months at home with wife Glenda while holding a $130 weekly logging job, drawing $95.20 monthly allotment and $18.50 savings bond payments. The case prompted ACLU involvement and questions over bond and allotment refunds while Smith retains a six year service obligation with reserves before discharge.
