President Truman urged Congress to approve 17.85 billion dollars to accelerate armed forces expansion and speed the atomic energy program. He requested 16.8 billion for Army Navy Marines and Air Force and 1.05 billion to boost atomic stockpiles as world tensions rise.
President Truman urged Congress at a White House conference to approve 45 to 50 billion dollars in the current year and 60 billion or more in the next 12 months for defense. Senators and representatives predicted swift funding to boost armed forces to about 2.7 to 3.0 million by next year, with possible draft increases and mobilization changes after January. The appeal also references speeding defense arrangements for U S allies and fresh mobilization plans being discussed for the year ahead.

A Christmas display burst into flames in Kays Ltd toyland department store in Halifax Nova Scotia killing ten people as firefighters recovered bodies. The blaze began on the third floor just before closing time and damaged adjoining stores while the building was deemed hazardous to search. Police expected the toll to rise as investigation continued.
The magazine Sales Management predicts booming holiday buying will lift retail sales to new records for December and all of 1950. December sales are forecast at 13.874 billion dollars, up 11 percent from a year earlier, with full year 1950 up nearly 10 percent over 1949.

Kenneth Hammond a 14 year old of 2007 Clayton Street suffered minor bruises this morning when he darted in front of a car driven by A R Maupin Jr 34 of 2003 Elmo Place. The incident happened on Bello Monte Street near Miami Avenue. He was treated at Middletown Hospital and released. Police noted Hammond and his companion were on icy street when Maupin sounded his horn. The companion jumped back but Hammond started across. Maupin covered him with a blanket then called the McCoy Leffler ambulance for transport to the hospital. Damages estimated at 50 dollars resulted yesterday afternoon when Ralph E of 2206 Bryant Street skidded into the rear of another vehicle on Crawford Street. The other car was not damaged and the driver’s name was not obtained. George Blount of 30 West Chicago Avenue reported his car was struck and damaged about 100 dollars while parked on North Broad Street near the Manchester Hotel last night.
Akron businessman Herb E. Cook was reappointed to the advisory committee to the State Fire Marshal by Gov. Frank Lausche. Cook’s new term runs through October 9, 1957.
