Ohio public schools may serve peanut butter and soya supplemented beef and pork this year as food costs rise. Meals must meet federal nutrition rules with limited surpluses, possibly stressing local purchases. Some districts eye a five cent hot lunch price increase as bids for meat and supplies rise.
Nearly 500 bodies recovered after the worst Mexican earthquake in history. President Luis Echeverria toured the disaster zone by bus and ordered demolition of 10 000 unsafe buildings across more than 50 towns. Officials warned the death toll could reach 1 000 as aid converged on Puebla and Veracruz regions.
President Nixon vows to resist an historic court ruling ordering delivery of Watergate tape recordings for judge Sirica's private in chambers inspection. The decision asserts the court's authority over executive privilege and heightens the clash with Congress and the White House.
A unit of U S Marine AG fighter bombers began withdrawing from Nam Phong Air Base in northern Thailand as part of the pullout of the last U S combat forces in Southeast Asia. By Saturday about 2100 Marines and over 1400 Air Force personnel will have left with more than 100 aircraft.

The Cost of Living Council faced a decision on imposing new retail price ceilings by Saturday. If approved, motorists could see price rollbacks of one to three cents per gallon, while some stations below the ceiling could raise prices and others might close for Labor Day Weekend. A court order had blocked enforcement but the council won permission to enforce the ceilings.
U S District Judge Lee P Gagliardi refused to pause the case citing pretrial publicity. Mitchell and Stans face conspiracy obstruction of justice and perjury charges over alleged efforts to impede a Vesco SEC probe for a secret 200 000 dollar Nixon re election contribution. A separate trial for Harry Sears was granted.
Government infantrymen reopened Highway 5 to Battambang as a convoy of over 100 trucks entered Phnom Penh. Cambodian forces say they cleared rebel bunkers along a two mile stretch, while efforts to reopen Highway 4 toward the coast continue amid food shortages and rising prices.
