Muskie, seen as capable though not nationally popular, joins a bid to bridge internal rifts over Vietnam while Humphrey pledges unity and order in a campaign to overhaul the party.
Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey pledges to explore new policies to end the Vietnam war if elected, aiming for a ceasefire and serious negotiations by January 1969. He denounces mob violence and calls for civil rights, while party divisions and street clashes in Chicago color the convention scene.
Beverly Hills police report four year old Stanley Stafford recovered from his kidnapper. Police chief Clinton Anderson announced the child was found with the money and all.
About 3 000 demonstrators clash with National Guardsmen near the Conrad Hilton during Chicago antiwar protests. Tear gas and rifle butt use follow mass arrests the previous night as delegates and reporters observe from security lines and hotel balconies.
The Middletown area sees partly cloudy skies and a warm-up through Saturday with highs in the upper 80s. Tonight’s low will be in the upper 50s. yesterday’s high reached 80 and the morning low was 52.
A rusty cap of disaster unfolded as a fuel loaded B52 bomber from McCoy Air Force Base crashed near Cape Kennedy two miles from missile row. Maj Bobby L Ward stayed with the plane until electrical power failed and it plunged to earth after seven crewmen bailed out, all surviving with minor injuries. The crash occurred as thousands worked at the cape amid Saturn 1B launches and a nearby nuclear submarine Daniel Webster fired Polaris missiles earlier in the day.
