Cemetery Battle Lets Black Mother Bur Die Son In all white Cemetery
Mary Campbell, a Black mother from Fort Pierce, won court authorization to bury her son Spec. 4 Pandex Williams in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, an all white cemetery after a legal fight spurred by a 1960s segregation policy. The judge ordered immediate compliance and barred interference as burial plans proceeded with military honors and a 21 gun salute.
