Blight Heavy Corn Damage Overstated, OSU Economist Says
Ohio State University extension economist Dr. Wallace Barr says southern corn leaf blight may overstate damage to the U.S. corn crop. Even a 10 percent drop would total about 4.7 million bushels, with 5.15 billion bushels available for 1970-71. Domestic needs remain covered, exports may fall, and prices could rise 20 to 30 cents. Barr notes offsetting supplies in oats, barley, and sorghum plus substituting wheat. International buyers may shift to South Africa, Mexico, Thailand, and Argentina.
