A dynamite blast at Beirut's main vegetable market near Martyr Square killed seven and injured about 30 as panic spread. Survivors described severed limbs and widespread rubble with troops arriving to restore order after a violence-filled week.
Reported clashes erupted as dissident miners defied UMW leaders and refused to end a wildcat strike in Cabin Creek Kanawha County West Virginia Police said shots were fired but no injuries occurred as about 40 miners stood firm after an International Executive Board order. Arnold was mentioned as UMW president.
Mohawk families, about 30 households, move from disputed Adirondack forestland to Clinton County New York. After three winters in handmade cabins, they plan a model village on 2400 acres with fishing and hunting rights, while pursuing their long-standing land claim.

Chinese Communist Party Chairman Hua Kuo-feng met with Secretary of State Cyrus Vance in Peking to push Washington to sever Taiwan relations as a condition for any new China US diplomatic ties. Hua noted Carter and Vance cited the 1972 Shanghai Communique and said the talks were exploratory. Vance’s meetings followed sessions with Huang Hua and Teng Hsiao-ping, with a dinner and a toast promising candor and progress.
