Prague joins a one hour general strike against the Soviet invasion led crackdown. President Ludvik Svoboda travels to Moscow for talks while occupation forces detain leaders and reports of arrests and casualties mount.
President Johnsons scheduled talks with Soviet Premier Kosygin facing disruption after the Czechoslovak crackdown. Despite Prague invasion, officials kept open the possibility of a Moscow visit and renewed missile curb discussions. Senate leader Mansfield shifted from troop withdrawal to maintaining current European forces.
Hundreds of Westerners flee through West Germany on E12 from Prague amid Soviet pressure. About 400 Americans traveled in a 100-car convoy organized by the U S Embassy, while others failed to cross bridges blocked by Soviet tanks. Witnesses report Czech resistance and street clashes, including a Prague bus ramming a Russian tank and Soviet gunfire near the Jalta hotel.
Witnesses arriving from Prague describe tanks rolling through streets, tramways toppled, and crowds confronting soldiers. Danes report locals challenging Russians with questions and bloodied flags, while Russians claim a counterrevolution as tanks advance through the city.
One week after his fourth major heart attack since April, former President Dwight D. Eisenhower remains in critical condition at Walter Reed. Doctors report no major heart rhythm disturbance in the past 24 hours and say he is resting comfortably, though he remains critically ill.
In South Vietnam the enemy launched more than 50 rocket and mortar attacks across the country in six straight days of heavy fighting. The assaults hit northern areas central highlands and Saigon region with infantry followups while a Special Forces camp near the Cambodian border held out against about 500 North Vietnamese troops. U S Marines fought near Da Nang and Marble Mountain as nearly 2 000 enemy soldiers were reported killed in the week while allied casualties were light Thieu prepared a nationwide TV address to discuss the renewed attacks and border–centered operations continued near Dau Tikong 40 miles northwest of Saigon.
The Middletown area is expected to endure hot and humid conditions through Saturday with afternoon and evening cloudiness. Tonight’s lows range from 70 to 76 degrees. yesterday’s high reached 93 with a 74 degree low this morning.
