Debates Sought Between Ford and Carter By League Push

The League of Women Voters urges a nationally televised three debate series between President Ford and Democrat Jimmy Carter with potential dates in October and a possible vice presidential debate. Carter has in principle accepted the idea and named staff to work with the league. Ford has also shown openness but has not named organizers. Eight Die in Austrian Bus Crash

Eight killed and 43 seriously injured when a West German tour bus plunged down a cliff into the Danube after a brush with a small car driven by an 84-year old pensioner. An ambulance also crashed, injuring two attendants.

Nonaligned summit flags Korea war risk and canal control

The final report from the nonaligned summit warns war could erupt in Korea at any moment and urges the United States to relinquish control of the Panama Canal. Lake Erie swimmer’s wife aids historic cross lake trek

Carol Elfers, wife of 41 year old Robert Elfers, helped launch and sustain his 63 mile Lake Erie swim from Port Stanley Ontario to near Fairport Harbor Ohio. She studied physiology to plan nourishment, and uses a floating platform for snacks every two hours while he backstrokes and advances toward the U nited States. The coast guard reported he crossed the international line Saturday morning and remained about 20 miles from completion with an expected arrival between eight am and noon.

Vacationers Flee as Forest Fires Bathe Western Europe

Fires raged through bone dry forests in Britain and France forcing thousands of campers and bathers to evacuate. A 15 month drought drained reservoirs across England Wales Belgium and parts of France, with 3000 evacuated by boat near Royan and La Palmyre as authorities warned of possible further evacuations.
