Forest fires rise across Oregon Utah and Idaho

Firefighting stretched across six parched Western states with a shift to Northern California as fires in Oregon Idaho Montana and Utah improved. In the Snake River Canyon northeast of Oregon the blaze jumped from 2 800 to 9 000 acres as trees infested by moths burned sending smoke 5 000 feet into the air. Utah called Montana planes to help Wasatch National Forest fires racing through sagebrush threatening farms. More than five thousand firefighters manned lines on five man-caused fires burning over 50 700 acres of timber and brush in Northern California.
