Ohio governor plans 10 percent cut as austerity looms
Gov. John Gilligan announced nearly 3,000 state employees will be laid off and state expenditures cut about 10 percent if the legislature does not pass an adequate budget and tax bill by Sept. 1. He warned he will rehire if a budget is approved after the deadline and said Ohio enters a new fiscal year without a permanent budget. The governor rejected deficit spending and questioned sales tax talk while GOP leaders discussed a one cent sales tax and a tax on corporate profits to fund the next two years.
