Muqtada al-Sadr sent last minute conciliatory messages amid a stand down deadline over Najaf Imam Ali shrine. He proposed disbanding the Mahdi Army and forming a political party while insisting on a ceasefire. Iraqi officials remain skeptical as Shaalan and Allawi press for concrete weapons withdrawal and surrender.
Deputy Sandy Brooks, escorting two prisoners to a Middletown Dental Group appointment, fought off Estell Wayne Buck who escaped a waist chain and tried to seize her gun. Aaron Koeller aided, restraining Buck until he surrendered. Buck is charged with aggravated murder and aggravated robbery in a separate March 7 killing.
Ohio supporters filed 14,473 signatures with Secretary of State J Kenneth Blackwell well above the 5,000 requirement for Ralph Nader to appear as an independent on the November ballot. The filing deadline loomed as attorney Don McTigue sought public records to challenge signatures. Coor dinator Julie Coyle said Nader could affect the race between John Kerry and George W. Bush.

Traci L. Burns, 31, of Hamilton, was sentenced to 12 years after pleading no contest to aggravated robbery and felonious assault for a Woodsdale Drive-Thru holdup. She struck clerk Melody Emerson in the head with a hammer, stole 200, and fled with two accomplices, leaving Emerson with a fractured skull and brain surgery.
