Medical care costs rose sharply with the cost of living, reaching 132 percent of the 1947-49 average. More Americans seek care and accept new treatments despite higher prices, fueling a surge in health insurance uptake. About 110 million are covered by hospital plans, with more gaining disability and major medical coverage. Employer plans, workers compensation, and government coverage add to the expanding safety net, underscoring rising health expenses.

The U S Court of Appeals ruled old mail bags and old pots aren’t adequate defense in an income tax case. Louis Red Smith, an ex-convict, was sentenced in 1955 to one year and one day and $2,000 fine for tax evasion after being convicted of evading $9,976 in 1947. A government agent noted Smith claimed the money came from an old mail bag or “dug up in an old iron pot.”
