West Germany bans Communist Party in constitutional ruling
West Germany outlawed the Communist party as unconstitutional after a Supreme Court decision. Police raided party headquarters in major cities, confiscating property and padlocking offices. The ban excludes East Berlin, where calls for protests followed the ruling. The court also banned Communist front groups, affecting about 200 allied organizations. The government's suit, filed nearly five years earlier, argued the party sought to overthrow the federal republic. The party's membership was about 80,000.
