Soufriere Volcano Eruption Expected After Widespread Evacuations

French scientists warn Soufriere on Guadeloupe could erupt within hours to days after 72 000 residents were evacuated from the danger zone. Charles Brousse of the University of Paris said the warning of a blowoff was issued to ensure no loss of life as residents fled toward Pointe a Pitre and surrounding areas. Gas, ash, and steam were observed with five vent points visible from the air as evacuation expanded.
