Air Force Capt. Joseph Kittinger jumped from 102,200 feet above the New Mexico desert in an open gondola for a record high in manned balloon flight. He landed after 13 minutes 8 seconds descent, opening the parachute at 17,500 feet, and underwent a routine medical check after landing.
Karen Kemline nine is recovering after blood transfusions. Her parents Allan and Mrs. Kemline of Albany objected to transfusions due to Jehovah's Witness beliefs. Dr Byron Zaharias performed surgery at Kaiser Foundation Hospital Walnut Creek where he urged to do whatever is necessary to help Karen.

The nude decomposed body of six year old Angie May Stewart was found in dense brush near a Sierra foothill ranch west of Yosemite, with red and white pajama bottoms and a white dress nearby. Army Chief Warrant Officer Clarence Ashley, 35, is jailed for investigation of kidnapping and homicide. The girl's itinerant farmworker parents, William and (illegible) Stewart, are being held for neglect inquiries.
Rocket scientist Wernher von Braun presented plans for a four stage Saturn with double the payload of the current three stage rocket. He said a larger Saturn variant could send a crew to the moon with in orbit refueling, and a Nova rocket is also in planning for direct moon travel.
