Greece announces it is withdrawing its military forces from NATO commands while remaining in the political alliance. Panaghiotis Lambrias says delegations are returning from Izmir, July 21, after Turkey invaded Cyprus. Aims mirror De Gaulle’s 1966 stance but Greece keeps NATO membership.
Turkish tanks and infantry pierced Greek Cypriot defenses east and west of Nicosia as air strikes and artillery battered the city. Greek forces pulled back along a seven mile front near the new Famagusta road while both sides reported air and ground advances amid heavy smoke and shelling.
The United Nations Security Council unanimously urged renewal of the Cyprus cease-fire and resumption of Geneva talks on Cyprus political future. It deplored renewed fighting, reaffirmed the July 20 cease-fire resolution, and urged all parties to halt all firing and military actions immediately.
President Ford plans a distinct economic policy as he asserts his own input beyond Nixon era ideas. Budget Director Ash will present anti inflation agency proposals to Congress while terHorst notes Ford may revise or replace prior policy plans.

Government farm experts expect a temporary easing of beef prices toward year end due to sharply lower corn yields but warn that a smaller corn crop will raise retail meat prices in 1975. Drought across the Midwest will push more cattle to market this fall as production costs rise. Agriculture Secretary Earl L. Butz predicts some curtailment of cattle feeding and more slaughter later in fall, though rains may lift USDA corn estimates next month from a four year low.
