Fire probe officials critique Campbell County grand jury report
Beverly Hills report details memos from State Police Commissioner Kenneth Brandenburgh and Fire Marshal Bob Estep criticizing the Campbell County special grand jury findings on the May 1977 Southgate Nightclub fire that killed 165. The officials dispute delays in notifying patrons and challenge the grand jury’s conclusion of no criminal negligence. Estep notes a missing witness and says discrepancies exist between state investigators and the grand jury. Carroll seeks a special prosecutor, with a Stephens announcement awaited. Russell defends witnesses’ credibility amid differing testimonies.
