A Delaware & Hudson Montreal Limited passenger train with about 300 aboard collided with a 100-car Whitehall to Oneonta freight near the Saratoga Springs line. Two people were killed and about 40 injured as passengers were trapped in cars of the Laurentian. Ambulances reached the scene from Glen Falls and surrounding towns.

Family of Five Stranded After Mountain Rock Slide
A rescue team climbed to the 8000 foot Three Sisters peak in central Oregon to reach J George Schultz of Sacramento and his 11 year old son Robert. The two adults were injured while guiding three Schultz children Marie 10 Paul 8 and Tommy 7. Robert J Schultz of Corvallis reported the accident. Rescuers planned to evacuate the father and brother by horseback or helicopter.

Nine Die in Head-On Collision Near Corinth Mississippi
Nine people perished in a two car crash four miles west of Corinth on U S 72 near the Tuscumbia River bridge. Five victims were members of the Wadlington family headed for a lakeside vacation. a 12 year old girl survived with serious injuries. The dead include Malcolm Wadlington his wife and three daughters Judy 13 Jane 11 Ann 10 from Sledge Betty Brown 10 Iuka Don Gene 35 Burton Davis 35 and Billy O Neal from Booneville. Ann Hogan 12 of Sledge survived. Police reported the fatal collision occurred on the bridge over the Tuscumbia River.
