Seven teenagers en route to a church picnic were killed when a Santa Fe passenger train struck their stalled car near Olton Texas. The driver and 11 youths had been traveling to a park in Lubbock for the First Baptist Church outing.
President Kennedy summoned top advisers to the White House with indications he may delay a 1962 tax cut. Preliminary July figures showed a moderate pickup in business, and officials including Dillon Goldberg Hodges Bell and CEA members led by Heller were to confer on tax and economy. CHICAGO AP The nation's railroads plan a ten percent workforce reduction to cut operating costs. Spokesman James E. Wolfe testified at a U S District Court hearing that about 65 000 jobs would be eliminated, while five operating unions representing 210 000 workers seek a temporary order to halt the changes. The plan envisions 13 000 firmen with under 10 years seniority to be dismissed immediately and 40 000 jobs reduced gradually via retirement transfers and turnover, plus 25 000 more positions targeted under presidential commission work rules. The unions threaten to strike if the changes take effect.
Geneva AP report says Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Valerian Zorin rejected a Western plan for zonal inspections to verify disarmament. He dismissed the idea of international checks across Soviet territory and argued the proposal resembled espionage.
