A fierce three hour rain and electrical storm drenched Cincinnati with 45 inches of rain in the midtown area from 7 to 10 p.m. Water wind and lightning caused widespread damage with unofficial estimates topping a million dollars. Some districts saw slightly less rain.
In Dayton amid rain a teenage couple William Earl Blevins 19 and Lois 18 died from a street collision. Lois died of internal injuries Tuesday night, William Earl died early today. The other driver Ernest Welch 30 was treated and released.
A cool front moves into the Miami Valley bringing fair mild weather. Official forecast calls for clearing cooler conditions today and tonight with northerly winds and a low around 81. Thursday should be pleasant with a high near 81. Yesterday's high was 87 and the morning low 67. Rain last night totaled .98 inches.
British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan arrived in Bonn for a two day meeting with Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. They planned to press for European unity and world peace as their main objectives.
The Weather Bureau reported a northwest hit belt of thunderstorms that stalled and dumped heavy rain. Temperatures fell about 10 degrees as the Ohio River rose a foot in an hour. By 10 p.m. rain moved south and stopped near midnight. Floodwaters three to four feet filled streets and a Johnston Paper Bag Co building roof collapsed, triggering sprinklers but most products saved by being stored on dollies above the floor.
A 133 unit downtown Phelps Apartment building was struck by lightning causing no injuries but knocking out elevator service. In Cincinnati Enquirer offices, newsprint was damaged by water while trees and electric wires fell citywide. Mill Creek Expressway and Central Parkway flooded. at least 15 cars stopped due to high water. A Price Hill sewer burst sent water rising six feet, observed by a taxi driver.

Detroit AP report Robert Smith 39 tries to reclaim an impounded car but is barred due to license revocation. He returns with George Lewis 40 who shows a valid license and offers to take the car. A check reveals eight dollars in traffic warrants for Lewis. with only two dollars between them, Lewis is jailed. Smith later returns barefoot after selling his shoes and socks to free his friend. Lewis is released.
Washington AP Democrats push rapid Senate action on a bill to provide medical care for the elderly. Johnson also targets raising the minimum wage to 1.25 dollars and covering 3 to 5 million more workers. The push follows a party-line defeat of Eisenhower civil rights legislation, seen as a strategic move before the presidential campaign.
Vincent Massey former governor general is reported by son Lionel to be getting along fine in Royal Victoria Hospital after a minor surgery for an undisclosed ailment.
Specialist Albert Tatsuno discovered his wife Tomoko Tatsuno 25 and their daughters Margie 14 months and Ann 4 months, along with ex-boyfriend Jack Warden 35, dead from gunshot wounds in a Wahiawa studio. A .38 revolver was found near Warden. The note in Japanese implied departure with the children to Honolulu.
Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts denounced Republican tactics as eleventh hour politics. He accused the GOP of aiming to block federal aid education housing medical care for the aged and the minimum wage through civil rights legislation.
In Leopoldville Lumumba threatens action while Dag Hammarskjold’s return is awaited to assess the U.N. Security Council mandate to replace Belgian troops with U.N. forces in Katanga. U.N. commanders expect entry into Katanga with no shooting as Tshombe allows access under conditions excluding Communist troops.
Baron Jean Van Den Bosch arrives in Nice after expelling Belgian ambassador to Le Congo. He is met at the airport by wife daughter and a delegation of French and Belgian officials. He says he has nothing to say and will keep his opinions for his government.
In Elisabethville Katanga’s capital locals expect Hammarskjold to accept Tshombe’s conditions as Lumumba balks at the security stance. Tshombe asserts Katanga and UN forces would guard province roads while Lumumba vows a state of emergency and closure of Belgian consulates amid mounting tensions.
A rebel army group seized Vientiane, the Lao administrative capital, and declared a neutralist policy. Communications blackout followed a brief outbreak of gunfire that killed two. Premier Tiao Samphon and his government were reported safe in Luang Prabang, about 100 miles north.
Rebels in Laos reportedly control Vientiane after Tuesday broadcasts. All flights to Vientiane were cancelled through Thursday as diplomatic notices said foreigners should leave. Rebels promised friendly ties and economic aid, while foreign property would be respected. 753 Americans were in Laos, including 261 connected to U.S. military aid.
Philadelphia AP reports Wilt Chamberlain signed a new three-year contract with the Philadelphia Warriors after declaring retirement last March. Owner Eddie Gottlieb did not disclose terms but called Chamberlain the highest paid athlete in sports today.
NEW YORK AP Agreement reached that Vice President Richard Nixon and Senator John Kennedy should meet in live debates on television and radio. Representatives of both campaigns met with network executives to discuss feasibility, scheduling, and locations for joint appearances. Both candidates had previously expressed willingness to debate.
President Eisenhower told reporters that Democrats overstate the time needed to pass his proposed 21 point legislative program. He urged Congress to stay in session to enact laws and said there is no recession or low mood in the country. He would meet Khrushchev if a useful purpose arose and rejected charges that he froze defense funds.
Farmers at Fuji area near Mt. Fuji ended their protest against a U S Marine firing practice after camping in the target zone. Japanese farmers had gathered at the base area to challenge the drill and call for a halt.
In New York a despondent 27 year old medical technician threatened suicide from a seventh floor apartment. Patrolman James Dougherty kept her on the line for minutes, coaxing details and keeping her talking while a patrol unit located the building. She was later taken to Bellevue Hospital for observation.
