Sugar Price Hike Could Raise Cost of Many Foods

Legislation before the House Ways and Means Committee, after approval by the Agriculture Committee, may push up the retail price of a 5 pound bag of sugar by about 7 cents and lift prices for thousands of foods and beverages containing sugar. The bill would raise the minimum price for imported raw sugar to 16 cents per pound, from 14.65 cents, enabling U S producers to lift domestic prices without losing customers to overseas sources. Foreign sugar accounts for 45 percent of U S supply and sells on the world market for 6 to 7 cents per pound.

Meany Blames Rates for Inflation and Rails at Labor Role

Meany argues rising prices, not wages, drive inflation and says organized labor will cooperate with the Carter administration only within reason. He criticizes the postal wage pact as inadequate and predicts its rejection by about 500,000 postal workers, warning that public sector wage restraint could spill into the private sector.
