Blues and BBQ brighten Lebanon day

In Lebanon a sunny weekend featured Blues and Barbecue activities on the town square. Local musicians performed blues tunes while vendors offered barbecue and craft items drawing families and visitors to enjoy food music and community camaraderie.

Dayton airman brings luck charm cap aboard Iraq aeromedical flight

Capt. Jim Kern, an emergency room nurse and Air Force reservist from Oakwood, travels 40 miles north of Baghdad to care for wounded evacuees bound for Germany. He dons a Dayton Dragons cap he calls a lucky charm, connecting with soldiers who recognize the hat. The 445th Airlift Wing at Wright-Patterson flies the C-141 Starlifter, a workhorse nearing retirement but in high demand after 9/11 and subsequent wars, as it ferries troops, detainees, and casualties to bases like Ramstein and Landstuhl. The squadron logged record hours in fiscal 2003 and aims for 15,000 in the current year. Despite the plane's aging design and nickname the tube of pain, Kern embraces the challenge of aeromedical evacuation on the C-141 under night conditions to avoid insurgents.

Iraqi amnesty law targets minor insurgents amid Najaf violence

Iraqi interim Prime Minister Ayad al-Lawi signed a Saturday amnesty aimed at persuading minor criminals to lay down arms and join reconstruction efforts.
