Harrisburg investigators chase a mysterious pneumonia like illness affecting 25 Legionnaires and 110 sickened others after the July convention. Health officials fear an unknown agent and pursue leads across hotels and attendees.
Health officials, led by Cohn and State Health Secretary Leonard Bachman, rule out fungus bacteria and most viruses in 135 attendees linked to a four day convention. Testing for toxins from animals vegetables chemicals or household items continues with no contagious spread or fresh cases since Tuesday.
Ohio agricultural experts forecast bumper harvests for corn and soybeans after a wet spell improved soil moisture. Mark Evans of the Ohio Crop Reporting Service says conditions are good to excellent, with July largely favorable and only a few counties facing moisture shortages. About 15 percent of Ohio corn is in the dough stage.
Scientists in Pasadena report again that the Viking mini laboratory shows tantalizing activity in Martian soil that could signal life, though alternatives abound. The test aims to sterilized-soil control by Aug. 23, as Viking 2 remains in orbit with the lander planned for Sept. 4 to explore northern Mars.
Today's forecast shows mostly cloudy skies and cooler temperatures with highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s. Tonight’s low expected in the low to mid-50s. Tomorrow’s high will reach into the 70s.
Alan Baird told police his car steered strangely for five blocks before stopping at a service station. He learned someone had jacked up the vehicle, stolen the tires and rims, then lowered it onto the brake drums, leaving him driving on an empty wheel site with no tire awareness.
Tropical Storm Belle grew into the season’s first hurricane with winds up to 80 mph. A hurricane watch covers the Atlantic coast from Georgia to Cape Hatteras as Belle moves northwest about 350 miles east of Palm Beach. Gale winds extend 100 miles north and 75 miles south of the center.
